Personal: Arizona Road Trip, Part Three!

This is part three of my recap of our road trip to Arizona. In case you missed them, read part one and part two.

After riding a pontoon boat and exploring Upper Antelope Canyon during our stay in Page, I had sort of put our impending Grand Canyon visit at the back of my mind. But when we left Page Monday morning and headed toward the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, I started to get really excited and so did Chris. I think the drive took four hours, but those hours just seemed to fly by, which was great because there’s nothing worse than a long drive to somewhere you really want to get to! Just like the last two posts, these images are a mix of cell phone, Polaroid a SLR photos…

We stopped at the first outlook point, which happened to be the location of the Lookout Tower. You can climb all the way to the top of the tower for some spectacular views of the canyon. The only bad part was we were there in the middle of the day when the light could NOT be worse for photos, so I’m not really impressed with the photos I took, though I am glad I took them. Can’t always have light the way I want it, I suppose. :)

My favorite part about our Grand Canyon visit was finding a lookout point with a hiking trail that allowed you to literally walk right to the edge of the cliffs without any barrier. It was incredible and I felt so exhilarated standing on the edge and looking out at such amazing views. Nature is pretty amazing, you guys. And you remember my self-portrait project, right? Well obviously I had to take one here.

Chris was pretty freaked out at how easy I was hopping around from cliff to cliff, but he eventually mustered up the courage to get a photo as well, and made it look easy, at that!

After spending a few hours taking in the sights of the Grand Canyon and having a nice lunch at one of the restaurants in the park, we decided to head to Vegas for the night so that we didn’t have a full day of driving until we got home. Not long after we exited the Grand Canyon, Chris saw a sign that made him gasp and veer off the road with a quickness I have never seen from him before in my life (he drives like a grandma, usually). The sign he saw? Was for Bedrock City, a roadside attraction he had heard about that is essentially a life-size recreation of the town of Bedrock, where the Flinstones live!

I don’t think words can do justice to the weirdness/awesomeness that is Bedrock City, so I’ll just let a few our cell phone and Polaroid pics do the talking. ;)

I honestly think Bedrock City might have been the highlight of the trip for Chris. He’s a lover of weird roadside attractions and to just stumble upon a find like this was pretty exciting for him. It was definitely an awesome and memorable way to end our trip.
